Scheduled Scaling
Scheduled Scaling changes a cluster's number of nodes at the times and on the days of the week that you configure. Use it for predictable workload peaks and low periods, such as regular business hours and overnight traffic.
Each rule specifies Day of week, Execution Time, and Number of Nodes. The node size and cache capacity per node stay the same. Total compute and cache capacity change with the number of nodes.
Warning:
- During scaling, some connections might disconnect and reconnect intermittently.
- Reducing the number of nodes reduces total cache capacity and can affect query response times.
- Increasing the number of nodes can increase charges.
Rule requirements and behavior
- Configure at least one rule. You can configure up to 24 rules for a cluster.
- Each rule must have a unique Execution Time. Keep at least one hour between rule execution times.
- Select at least one Day of week for each rule.
- You cannot use
0as Number of Nodes. - If the execution time has already passed for the current day, the rule first runs at that time on the next selected day of the week.
- A rule runs only while the cluster is Running. If the cluster is not Running, VeloDB Cloud retries the scheduled execution for up to 30 minutes and then skips that execution.
Before you begin
- You need permission to manage compute resources in the warehouse.
- The cluster must be Running.
- If Auto Scaling is enabled, select Auto Scaling in Scaling Mode and click Disable before configuring Scheduled Scaling.
- Review the current node size, cache per node, and node count before choosing target counts.
- Confirm the time zone shown next to Execution Time.
Create a schedule
-
Log in to the VeloDB Cloud console.
-
In the upper-left corner, select the warehouse that contains the cluster.
-
In the left navigation pane, under Compute, click Clusters.
-
Click Physical Clusters.
-
Click Card, then select the running cluster to open its details panel.
-
Click Scaling. In Scaling Mode, select Scheduled Scaling.
-
Review Node Size, Cache per Node, and Number of Nodes under Current Configuration.
-
Under Target Configuration Range, configure the rule:
Field Description Day of week Select the days from Monday through Sunday on which the rule should run. Execution Time Set the time when the rule should run on the selected days. Use the time zone displayed in the console. Number of Nodes Set the target number of nodes for the cluster. -
Click the checkmark icon to save the rule.
-
To add another rule, click Add Rule, configure its days, execution time, and node count, then click the checkmark icon.
-
Review the complete schedule, then click Confirm.
To verify the configuration, reopen Scaling Mode, select Scheduled Scaling, and check the saved rules.
When a rule changes the cluster's node count, the cluster status changes to Scaling and returns to Running when the resource change finishes. Verify the number of nodes and total compute and cache capacity in the cluster details panel.
Change a schedule
- Open Scaling Mode for the cluster and select Scheduled Scaling.
- Edit a rule's Day of week, Execution Time, or Number of Nodes.
- Click the checkmark icon to save the rule.
- Review the updated schedule, then click Confirm.
Stop scheduled scaling
- Open Scaling Mode for the cluster.
- Select Manual Scaling.
- Review the target configuration and click Confirm.
To replace the schedule with workload-based scaling, select Auto Scaling, configure the minimum and maximum node counts, and click Enable.
